There are times when you think, “Jesus Christ, is there any story left here? What are we going to do?” And then, within that structure, that basic structure, you begin to understand how much freedom you have, particularly if you have an actor like Daniel [Craig] who can take the central character who you can push into areas perhaps he hasn’t been in before. One of the things I was very…I think it’s fair to say that without the extra time we wouldn’t have written such a good baddie and I don’t think we would have gotten Javier [Bardem] to play him, for example. One of the things I thought when I watched them, rewatched them, was it’s been a while since there was, even with Daniel, there’s been a while since there was a classic…what I would call a classic Bond villain. I’m not saying these guys weren’t great. I thought Mads [Mikkelsen] was particularly good in Casino Royale. But I wanted somebody perhaps a bit more flamboyant, perhaps a bit more frightening, and so I felt like we needed a great actor to achieve that.

Naomie Harris isn't Moneypenny, but she's not a throwaway character either. When we first meet Harris as MI:6 agent Eve, she's fighting right alongside Bond in that Istanbul sequence-- but it was clear from how much training Harris underwent, and how thrilled she was to take the part, that she doesn't drop out of the film immediately after. "Eve is out in the field, totally different from Moneypenny," Harris was quick to explain. "I'm a field agent definitely, not a secretary." And a field agent who offers Harris one of the biggest, maybe best roles of her career-- "I was really excited [when I read the script]. largely because of my part, selfishly. I was very excited. I didn't realize that I would have that size part."

Bond may be funnier than you remember him. Nearly everyone talked about the focus on humor in this film, from Harris revealing that the original script she read was changed significantly to "add a lot more humor and wit" to Craig saying, enigmatically, that "humor comes more out of a situation than it does out of gag lines." During the press conference, he was a little more bold about his character's wit this time around: "Yeah, he's funny as hell in this movie."

…But Skyfall is also something new. Mendes was careful to use the word "regeneration" rather than "reinvention" to describe the Bond of Skyfall, using, of all things, a Dr. Who metaphor to explain it: "I was brought up on the idea that Dr. Who, at the end of his final episode, he dissolves and a new actor pops up and he regenerates, it's a whole other character. I've always loved that idea." Craig was much blunter about the different landscape of his third go-round as Bond: "[It's different] in every way."

Don't worry too much about continuity with the other two Bond films. Practically everyone brought up Casino Royale in interviews, whether praising Mads Mikkelsen as an excellent villain or Craig's first turn as Bond or the emotional stakes of his relationship with Eva Green's Vesper Lynde. Not a single person brought up Quantum of Solace. Clearly no one is ashamed of the most recent Bond movie, but all seem eager to move on as well, and turn the page over to something new.

Sam Mendes is taking some cues from Christopher Nolan. Mendes mentioned The Dark Knight and Nolan twice in a very short span, first praising the current Batman run (along with the Bourne films) as one of the best franchises, "because there are characters at the center who are to some degree in conflict about what they do, and are pushed right to the edge." Then talking about his learning to direct action, he praised Nolan's sense of non-linear action sequences: "The challenge is to create parallel action so you're not locked into a linear chase, which is something that Chris Nolan for example does very, very well. It's never just A following B, there's something else going on simultaneously, and they overlap." As two British directors who broke out in smaller dramas before moving on to giant, blockbuster action films, Mendes and Nolan have clear similarities-- so if you're curious about what Mendes-directed action will look like, you may need look no further than The Dark Knight.

We can also credit Broccoli with tackling the sexism of 007. “Fortunately, the days of Bond girls standing around with a clipboard are over,” she says drily.

But she knows Bond isn’t Bond without glamour and gorgeous women. In Skyfall, Naomie Harris plays field agent Eve, while French actress Bérénice Marlohe is the enigmatic Sévérine.

“Actually, when you read the early books, and watch the early films, the women were very interesting, exotic, complicated people. I always get into such an issue when I talk about these things,” she adds, knowing any quote will make headlines around the world. “But they were pretty strong in their own right. Yes, okay, Pussy Galore was a pilot and gay, but that was pretty extraordinary for the time, the fact that she fell into bed with Bond.

One senses that Broccoli, elegant, charming, has a core of steel. In the early days, she watched Craig’s back, accompanying him to press conferences, batting off the ferocious criticism that first greeted his casting for Casino Royale.

“It’s absurd,” she shudders slightly. “I think that’s the trouble with the internet now. Everyone has an equal voice so people read something — supposedly written with great authority — and it’s by a 12-year-old in a little town some place in the United States who’s never seen Daniel Craig, doesn’t know what he’s capable of, and starts this fire. And then it’s given prominence, which is bizarre. Of course we were making the film and we knew what we had, so we just ignored it.”

Divorced, with a grown-up daughter, Broccoli works long days. As well as overseeing the end of shooting on Skyfall, she is co-producing the stage version of Chariots of Fire.

Our interview takes place at the Gielgud Theatre, which has been turned into a race track for the 1924 Paris Olympics. There’s something thrilling about watching the young actors playing runners Harold Abrahams and Eric Liddell as they thunder around the track.

The play brings back memories for Broccoli, who co-produced the original 1981 film with her friend Dodi Fayed, who died in the crash that killed Diana, Princess of Wales.

“Dodi really identified with the character of Harold Abrahams, a Lithuanian Jew struggling for acceptance in Britain. Dodi had a similar understanding of knowing what it was like to struggle to be accepted. And he really appreciated Eric Liddell’s strong belief in not wanting to run on a Sunday. He was touched by the story.”

If Kathryn Bigelow can direct the all-male Hurt Locker, how about a female director for Bond? “I’d be thrilled.”

es werden für ihn sicherlich noch zahlreiche auftritte in den USA folgen (von SNL mal ganz abgesehen), damit 007 dort auch endlich erfolge feiert.

You have the moment where Bond adjusts his cuff. Where did that come from?

That’s Daniel. He didn’t tell me he was going to do that. I loved it, because I was sitting there like this [mimes clapping and cheering] because it’s a great moment. He was jumping off a digger arm. All I was thinking was, “Just land.” You know what I mean? I wasn’t thinking about the cuffs. I was just like, “Just land and don’t fall off the back.” Because, yeah, he’s on a safety wire, but the wire’s narrower than your biro. But he’s just, “It’s fine, it’s fine.”

And he’s jumping off a digger arm, it’s 15 feet up and the train’s moving. It’s making a loud noise, you’re in the carriage with a monitor screen and it’s dusty and hot and all that, and he jumps. And to have the courage to do it – which is Daniel all over, courage slash madness to do it – and to have the canniness to know that, at this point, maybe Sam would like it if I did the [adjusts cuff].

Why did you love it? What’s your reading of it?

What I loved about it was that I felt there was a little bit – and by the way, we debated it, and we got a take of him not doing it – of the old-style pride and the élan and the chutzpah of Bond. The style of the man. What I like, when Daniel does it – and you can’t print this – is there’s a real “fuck you” about it. And I love that about what Daniel does.

It’s not self-conscious. It’s something fuelled by a bit of anger. So you get both things. You get a real action hero, and you get a man with a sense of style and poise. That’s Bond. You have to find those moments that are quintessential Bond, and it’s not easy to find them. There’s a moment in the Komodo fight, and Daniel again went for a little idea – he points like this, and even when he’s turned upside down, he’s still staring at it.

Part of the movie’s channelling your 13-year-old self, and that’s who it’s for – it’s not just for you and me, it’s for my 13-year-old son and his mates. And so you’re talking to both sets of audiences, really.
